Local Beer Event Roundup

A lot of exciting beer events coming up in the Southeast: beer dinners, festivals, New Belgium "Clips" Film Festival... Are you ready?

Tonight, Aug. 22, 2013 - Oskar Blues Pint Night at the Brew Pump

The Brew Pump is a brand new beer bar in a converted gas station at 760 Haywood Road in West Asheville. This is the bar's first pint night, featuring our new neighbors from down in Brevard. There will be bluegrass music with Steven Shealy, free Oskar Blues merchandise, and the El Kimchi Food Truck will be on site providing the grub.

See you there.

Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013 - VA Craft Brewers Festival

This weekend, the Virginia Craft Brewers Festival will take place at Devils Backbone Brewing Company in Nelson County, Virginia (a quick five-hour jaunt from Asheville). Devils Backbone cleaned up at GABF last year, taking home a total of eight medals, more than any other brewery, as well as the Small Brewpub and Small Brewpub Brewer of the Year awards. Combine that with a stellar lineup of Virginia breweries and a beautiful mountain setting, this fest will be sure to please.

Camping passes are available up until the end of the day Thursday (today!), so better get on it.

Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013 - Left Hand Beer Pairing Dinner at Ruka's Table

Esteemed chef Justin Burdett and Ruka’s Table will host a beer dinner Wednesday, August 28, 2013, featuring Longmont, Colorado's Left Hand Brewing Company. “I love pairing food with craft beer as each individual beer offers a wide variety of components and flavors, making it fun to highlight and embellish with local, seasonal ingredients from the kitchen,” says Chef Burdett. Five courses will be prepared by Burdett to complement a flight of five beers from Left Hand:

Tomato Gelee, Lemon Pudding, Charred Corn, Squash
Paired with Polstar Pilsner

Georgia clams, Beer broth, Rye and Grapefruit
Paired with Stranger American Pale Ale

Rabbit, Sweet Onion and Raspberry Tart, Rabbit Bacon
Paired with 400 lb. Monkey

SC Quail, Country Ham, Fresh Fig, Pickled Shallots
Paired with Black Jack Porter

Milk Stout Ice Cream, Cream Soda
Paired with Nitro Milk Stout

The dinner, hosted at Ruka’s Table at 163 Wright Square, Highlands, NC, will have one seating at 6:30 pm and reservations are required. The cost is $60 per person, exclusive of tax and gratuity. For reservations, call Ruka’s Table at 828.526.3636.

Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013 - High Country Beer Fest

The 6th Annual High Country Craft Food and Beverage Festival takes place in Boone, NC, over Labor Day weekend. Look for mountain music, food vendors, 20+ craft breweries from North Carolina and 20+ regional and national brewers.

Also keep an eye out for a beer made with 100% NC ingredients from Ivory Tower Brewery, part of the Fermentation Science Department at Appalachian State.

Only VIP tickets remain, but you never know what you can find on Craigslist.

Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013 - Asheville Winter Warmer Tickets on Sale

Last year I had a blast cataloguing the best beers and beards from the event. I'm looking forward to even steeper competition next time around!

Friday, Sept. 6, 2013 - New Belgium "Clips" Beer and Film Tour (Asheville and Athens, GA)

I've been looking forward to this event for months. The traveling film festival from New Belgium stops through both Asheville and Athens the first Friday of September. Admission is free, and 100% of proceeds from beer sales benefit local non-profits. The Asheville event supports both Asheville Greenworks and Asheville on Bikes.

This year's chosen films include mastering the technique of dice rolling; the quest for the ultimate full moon shot; a duel to be the hippest hipster; and homebrewing in a small New York City apartment.

More details and press release on Mountain Xpress.

Friday, Sept. 6, 2013 - Wicked Weed Pickin' and Pullin' Festival

It's going to be a tough choice with Clips of Faith going on, but if you can swing both events, do it. The downstairs event space at Wicked Weed will host a pig roast, bluegrass music, and the release of their smoked pumpkin beer.

Stay tuned for more events coming up in September!
