Highlands, NC: Ruka's Table Masters the Beer Pairing Dinner

Narrow, winding roads lead into the mountains of Highlands, NC, the kind that make you wonder how the treads on your tires are doing. Suddenly the forest road opens up to offer sweeping views of the surrounding states. Located in a small resort town in the Nantahala National Forest, Ruka's Table sources ingredients from its neighbors in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, and delivers food fit for any of the best restaurants in Atlanta, DC, or New York City. Head Chef Justin Burdett recently presented a beer pairing dinner showcasing many of these local ingredients.

Prior to working at Ruka’s Table, Burdett was Chef de Cuisine at Miller Union, a highly regarded farm-to-table restaurant in Atlanta. In March 2013, he was named among the top chefs in the Southeast by Food & Wine Magazine. He has also competed on the Food Network show "Chopped" -- and won.

How to Present an Incredible Beer and Cheese Tasting

This weekend's "No Whey Friday" beer and cheese tasting event absolutely lived up to expectations.

Michael Landis, of Atlanta Foods International, made an intoxicating presentation that stunned the 50 or so people in the meeting room at the Four Points Sheraton. As a Certified Cheese Professional, lead trainer for the Institut du Fromage, and international cheese judge, Michael brought expertise that made the event as educational as it was delicious. It was essentially a master class on how to conduct an amazing beer and cheese tasting.

Southern Appalachian Brewery & Dupont State Forest

Despite rainy weather for most of the weekend, my girlfriend and I managed to avoid it on Saturday as we explored a bit of Western North Carolina with our new four-legged companion. We ventured first to Dupont State Forest, about 50 minutes south of Asheville and 15-20 from Brevard. The plan: do some hiking, see some waterfalls, then check out Southern Appalachian Brewery in nearby Hendersonville.

After a nice drive through rural North Carolina, passing farms and horses and sheep along the way, we entered Dupont State Forest and parked at the Hooker Falls parking area.

I'm no Bill Bryson, but I do enjoy a walk in the woods from time to time. Even though this was mid-December and only the evergreen foliage remained, the beauty of the area was stunning. On a 2-3 hour hike along well-maintained trails, we saw multiple waterfalls, including Triple Falls and High Falls.

Brevard, NC: Oskar Blues Opens in North Carolina

The first of the "Big Three" breweries coming to Western North Carolina is officially open. Based in Longmont, Colorado, Oskar Blues' second brewery is located in Brevard, NC, just about 30 minutes from downtown Asheville. Famous for their canned craft beers like Dale's Pale Ale, Mama's Little Yella Pils, and Old Chub Scotch Ale, Oskar Blues decided to expand to the area for the water, the outdoor living, and Western North Carolina's borderline-obsessive beer culture.

Panama: La Rana Dorada

The craft beer scene in Panama remains small, but one of the major players right now is without a doubt La Rana Dorada. Run by the same people behind Colombia's hugely successful Bogota Beer Company, "The Golden Frog" has two locations that feature their four "cervezas artesanales con personalidad." That's "craft beer with personality" for all my gringo friends.

WA: Churchkey Can Company

You know it's big when even the celebs are getting on board.

Are you a fan of the HBO show Entourage?  Inc. and Techcrunch report that actor Adrian Grenier is a co-founder of Churchkey Can Company, a brewery start-up out of the Seattle area.  Their "shtick" is nostalgia for something most of us don't remember.  Instead of packaging in standard beer cans, Churchkey throws back to the old-style flat top beer can that you have to open with the pointy end of a can opener.  So that's what it's for...


The Washington Beer Blog tells us more about Churchkey Can Company and its interesting arrangement with the brewery next door.

So far Churchkey is keeping it local.  It can currently be found in these locations in Portland and Seattle.

Panama Brews Part 3: Una Noche de Cerveza

Panama Brews Part 2: The Imports (or Are They?)

Panama City, located on the Southern access of the Panama Canal, is considered by many to be the economic hub of Latin America. Each year, roughly 14,000 ships pass through the Canal, which in 2011 generated some $1.7 billion in revenue for this developing country. These numbers will surely increase with the ongoing Canal Expansion Project. Not surprisingly, economic activity like this attracts international attention -- which translates directly to the selection on the beer aisle.

Brooklyn, NY: Brooklyn Brewery

Passing through New York City after the American Craft Beer Festival, one of the things I wanted to do was visit the Brooklyn Brewery. I'd just finished the book Beer School by the founders of the brewery, so I was excited to see the results of their efforts.

Crossing the Brooklyn Bridge was a feat in itself - it must have been 100 degrees that day - so we were hot and thirsty once we got there. Situated in a very hipster part of Brooklyn called Williamsburg (coincidentally, the name of my hometown), the Brooklyn Brewery wasn't much more than a couple of brick warehouses - at least from the outside.

We were allowed to first wet our beaks on four of Brooklyn's beers. Our tour guide Justin led us through a sampling of their East India Pale Ale, Summer Ale, Local #2, and a Brewmaster's Reserve Concoction based on a cocktail called a Penicillin: scotch with lemon and ginger. They replicated those flavors by using British peat-smoked malt (to get the smokiness of Scotch) as well as lemon and ginger in the brewing of the beer. Prior to this tasting, I'd only had the Lager and Brown Ale, so I was glad to see that Brooklyn had some variety and the guts to push the boundaries a bit.

Now that we were cooled down and loosened up, Justin showed us through the brewhouse, pointing out the fermentation tanks, the canning and kegging lines, where the brewery was planning to expand, and giving us a little history along the way. Cool fact: the guy who designed the iconic I NY trademark, Milton Glaser, also created the logo for the Brooklyn Brewery.


After the tour, we went back to the tasting room and had a few more beers, enjoying the Pilsner, Brown Ale, and another glass of the EIPA.  I can't think of a better remedy for the New York City heat.  Believe it or not, most Americans live within 10 miles of a brewery. So get out there and support your local economy. Check out this website to find a brewery near you.
